Hip Pain Q&A

What causes hip pain?

You may experience frequent pain in your hips caused by degenerative diseases, injuries, or other medical conditions. Common causes of hip pain include:

  • Arthritis
  • Fractures
  • Sprains or strains
  • Joint disease
  • Pinched nerves
  • Osteoporosis
  • Cancer

Injuries from auto accidents and falls may also be the cause of your chronic hip pain. At Advanced Spine and Pain Center, your doctor evaluates your medical history and injuries and performs a physical examination to create a comprehensive treatment plan to manage your pain.

What are the symptoms of hip pain?

Hip pain may start gradually and worsen over time. You may feel pain worsen during simple physical activities or prolonged periods of sitting or lying down. Walking or performing strenuous activities may aggravate your pain.

Other symptoms of hip pain may include:

  • Burning or tingling
  • Numbness in the hip or leg
  • Swelling near the hip joints
  • Difficulty walking
  • Inability to bear weight on your leg

You may also suffer severe pain if your hip joint becomes dislocated during physical activities or as the result of an accident. If you suspect a dislocation in your hip, seek immediate medical treatment.

What treatment options are available for hip pain?

You may need to limit your activities for a period to determine if your hip pain resolves on its own. Your doctor may also recommend initial treatment with physical therapy and medications to alleviate your hip pain. They may also suggest steroid injections to reduce inflammation that can irritate your nerves and muscle tissue.

If these treatments aren’t effective in relieving your hip pain, your doctor may recommend stem cell therapy or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments to encourage the natural healing of your body using your cells. You receive injections of plasma or stem cells collected from your blood to replace damaged cells in the tissues of the hip region.

For hip pain caused by joint degeneration or disease, your doctor may recommend total joint replacement surgery as a permanent solution to your chronic hip problems.
